Okay I said I was gonna make a small thread about this before so here we go.
Obviously the first thing is being smart about the kind of credit you take out, and never defaulting on your payments. So say no to store cards/things with extortionately high interest rates, where possible. I know sometimes this isn’t always feasible.
Second thing is that some phone contracts don’t contribute to your credit score (from my experience). When I was on Vodafone it didn’t count to my credit score because it was considered a bill.
Whereas with O2, they’re contracts are 0% interest loans so it is considered credit.
I like the O2 contracts because you can pay them off early and it does wonders for your credit. You pay 2 DDs each month (1x airtime, 1x phone payment). When you pay off the entire phone payment, you’re no longer in your contract and you don’t have to pay the remaining airtime.
So with my latest contract I was paying £32 for my airtime and £32 for my phone. I saw a sim only contract for £10/month I liked but I had 17 months left of my phone payment. I paid 17x£32 and I was out of contract.
Compare this to Vodafone where I would have had to pay 17x£64 (combined monthly payment) to get out of contract... and it doesn’t even contribute to your credit score 😕
Anyway. I also have a credit card that I use sometimes but I always make sure I have the money I’m spending in my debit account, ready to clear the payment every month to avoid paying any interest/fees.
I don’t do this but I’ve seen people say you should put your bills on your credit card and use it in that way, still paying off the balance each month.
Stay away from things like Klarna 🙅🏽‍♀️🙅🏽‍♀️ And generally just using credit for any non-essential purchases, especially if you don’t have that cash readily available in your current account.
Anyway this is how I did it personally. Just to say - I still live with my parents before anybody gets on to me.
Also, signing up for something like this Experian service is good because it’s *free* and you get updated each month so it puts it at the forefront of your mind. Unless your credit is in an absolute shambles I wouldn’t suggest using a paid service.
