This has really bothered me over the last twelve hours or so.
Anyone else? 1/9 https://twitter.com/BeavertownBeer/status/1278362226672500737
When I arrived in UK in 2015, Beavertown were in the early stages of a wave that very few people would have believed possible. One of the most amazing growth stories in our industry. I looked on amazed and was proud of the achievements that my new friends there were making. 2/9
They appeared, from the outside, to be a model business. A seriously good product with fantastic design, a fun place to work, a committed group of people who truly believed in what they were doing and who were unrelentingly working together to a common goal. 3/9
A growing business will always get some things wrong and should, undoubtedly, be forgiven for making mistakes along the way. Though they must acknowledge these errors, learn from them, and make positive changes. 4/9
Businesses will always hire the wrong people and - no matter how aspirational you are - you are going to have your fair share of staff turnover. People don’t fit, they grow to a place where they need to move on to achieve their own goals, or they simply want a change. 5/9
I’ve heard too many stories (from too many people) to believe that Beavertown is anything like the one that I imagined in those halcyon days of my first year here. Stories of poorly handled dismissals, bullying, misogyny, harassment, and of a quietly toxic workplace culture. 6/9
This is far from a Beavertown only issue but this event highlighted how events can thrive in that kind of environment. I spoke of these problems in our industry at the Brewers Lectures in 2017 and I’m not sure anything has improved. In fact, they may well have got worse. 7/9
I have stood silent for too long. This is an industry that celebrates creativity, fun, and exploration but - like most creative industries- it takes advantage of people who naturally tend towards this space. We must protect our people more or risk losing them forever. 8/9
I would like to know whether senior management at Beavertown are aware of their business having this reputation and, if so, what they have been doing (or will do) to ensure that it is a place that people can feel safe and respected working in. 9/9
