Our friends are saying it better than us but we need to fundamentally change what we think of as a music venue and how we run shows in the future if we want things to be better.
There are wonderful venues in the UK that always pay acts and do great work booking diverse lineups but the vast majority are ran by and for straight white cis men and actively exploit artists.
I don't want to see all the pubs and bars in our towns close, but as "music venues" they need to be better, we need to make it easier to go to shows and easier to get onto a stage and to be paid for that work.
Not that it's their fault, but it is so utterly dispiriting when you ask a promoter in Manchester to make sure the venue is accessible and they extremely apologetically say they genuinely don't know of a venue that is.
