I feel like I'm being gaslighted by @educationgovuk here. How can face coverings be required on buses but be of no benefit in classrooms?
Surely what negative impacts on communication there are are massively outweighed by the negative impact on having to miss a week of school if infected or two weeks of school if you were sat next to someone infected?
Why are we not looking around the world at what works? Both in educational settings and out. Mask wearing hugely lowers (I know it doesn't stop completely) transmission.
Can we get @researchED1 or @EducEndowFoundn on this? A quick meta analysis of what's currently working around the world?
There's even guidance in this report for taking masks off once arrived at school. So they're clearly expecting kids to arrive wearing masks and then to remove them once at school. 🤦‍♂️
I honestly believe that with masks, we'll still get some cases and possibly the odd whole school shut down. But without masks in school any isolation of individuals or contacted individuals will be like putting out a fire with a toy water pistol.
Not a supersoaker either. One of those "3 for a pound" little plastic things.
Me, moving the 6th child to start coughing in my class this lesson...
Scenario 1: Kid Sneezes (no mask) - other kids start complaining spit got on them, surfaces need disinfecting, everyone's suspicious, lesson totally disrupted.
Scenario 2: Kid Sneezes (mask on) - everyone carries on as normal in knowledge it was all caught by the mask.
Yes, communication might be impaired a little by wearing masks, but my lesson is going to be disrupted *a lot* without wearing them. And that's before we've dealt with the kids missing school through isolation.
