Arundhati Roy labeled India as a Brahmin baniya upper caste hegemonical corporate military state. This is funny for several reasons. One is of course for lunacy in Roy who descriptively calls India by so big name.
I seriously do not get the Brahmin Bania thing. Brahmins are clearly identifiable group. There is no doubt.
But what do people mean by banias? What is their percentage? What was groups which we classify as banias? Is the former PM Manmohan Singh also a bania? Isn't everybody who owns a bania?
We need to critique the Ambedkarites and Periyarists and their methods to construct narratives. Ambedkar didn't like idol worship. But Ambedkarites blindly worship Ambedkar.
One of the terms which Ambedkarites came up was Brahmin-bania hegemony. You cannot interpret why such a term exists unless you talk about politics and power in real terms.
If we try to categorise the Indian ruling elites for for last 1000 years into three– they would be 1)land lord castes (Thakurs, Marathas, Mandal, Yadavs, Bhumihars, Nair, Jats, Sikhs and so on) 2) Muslims and 3) Brahmins.
Brahmins have lower crime rate than Thakurs, Muslims and Yadavs in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Each of them have comparable population. Brahmins have lower crime rate than Jats (Sikhs and Hindus) in Punjab and Haryana.
They also have lower crime rate than Marathas in Maharashtra and Periyarist castes in South.

The most SCST cases are registered each caste above then lastly Brahmins. In other words, the most SCST cases are not registered against Brahmins.
It's mostly against Thakurs, Bhumihars and so called backward castes. It appears hypocritical when Periyarists would bash the Brahminical hegemony but would not utter a single word against the so called backward castes which happen to cause more SCST atrocities.
In my honest opinion, what actually needs to happen that any caste which contributes to 10% SCST cases in respective state should be immediately removed from the quota system itself.
It would radically make them to not commit crime against Dalits. It clearly stands that if your group/caste indulges in crime against Dalits, it wouldn't simply get reservation.
But surprisingly, at least in South India, Maharashtra and Punjab have deeply anti-Brahmins politics. It is much established. And many dominant castes have started taking benefits of reservations and so on in state like Tamil Nadu. So they smartly escape an honest criticism.
It is quite sad that one of the most progressive communities in India– banias have become a punching bag of regional caste bigotry and politics mainly because they happened to migrate and prosper.
There is no basis to suggest that they commit more either violence or discrimination. The regional bigotry has somehow convinced the local population if the banias exit, the shop, profit and money will be their's.
