In early 1925, Everton signed Dixie Dean, perhaps the greatest English footballer of his era. And the world around, their supporters were ecstatic. Among them was a father who went on to name his son Everton. It was a name that cricket would never forget.
Weekes made 15 centuries in 48 tests, with an average of over 58. Not bad for a kid who could only get into the local Kensington Oval to cut the grass. His partnership with the other two W's, Sir Frank Worrell and Sir Clyde Walcott made the West Indies a cricket powerhouse
He retired at just 33, probably because he wasn't very happy with the WI board at the time. His run of five successive test 100s is yet to be equalled, and that 5th hundred was in front of a packed crowd at the Eden Gardens.
Weekes played 2 more sports for Barbados, football & bridge.
He remained healthy & thought that he might just make to another century.
When asked the secret of his longevity, he said '“For starters, I would say the word ‘hate’ has been removed from my vocabulary.”
RIP Legend!
