i think the intention of some of the themes in reservoir dogs is lost a bit because of it being quite simplified but, i don't think the racism is meaningless... perhaps i'm wrong, i can't know tarantino's exact intentions but bear with me i'm gonna make this kinda a thread:
firstly, disclaimer, tarantino is a cunt with a massive ego and an arrogance that is extremely clear, i don't want to sound like i'm riding his dick, i'm not, this is more based on the fact that i find the whole thing quite interesting because i think it's something people miss -
- now, it's important to note that one of tarantino's favourite movies is taxi driver, and he's expressed the fact that it has a lot of influence over his work. in taxi driver, though it's kind of subtle i guess, some people miss it, travis is racist -
- the stereotypes travis bases his racism on, are however, hypocritical, because they're traits he himself possesses. i think in reservoir dogs, the point of the characters having racist idea's is in many ways the same. these are bad people, they're criminals, they -
- rob banks for christ sakes, yet they talk down on people, and stereotype racial groups. mr pink's "i don't tip" speech would also come under the same hypocrisy. he criticises people for not having a proper job, yet is a criminal. it's all a juxtaposition. which therefor -
- is a kind of explanation as to why i think the slurs and racism and everything isn't meaningless and actually has intention... then again i might be totally wrong, tarantino might have had no reason other than to get off on stepping over the line, who knows
