The Chiefs specifically seeked out, traded for, and paid another defensive lineman in Frank Clark. They paid him what Jones wants to be paid.

For the Chiefs specific defense - a Steve Spagnuolo defense - a DE is more important than any DT but especially a pass rushing DT.
The front of the defense is centered around the DEs not only being to hold contain but beat OTs one on one semi-consistently. The rest of the front is all about being gap sound.

Jones is a PHENOMENAL player that played in that system, the system wasn’t build around him.
Tyrann Mathieu not only plays the most important position in the secondary but is the most versatile and the most like a chess piece.

He was also sought after, signed, and paid. The blitz packages and exotic coverages don’t happen without him. That’s what made the psss def good
Offensively, Tyreek Hill’s speed and dynamic ability is without a doubt the second most important part of the Chiefs. He changes literally every play from a defensive scheme perspective by just existing.

On top of that, he’s still an elite WR beyond the scheme altering existance
Kelce’s ability to be a great receiver and a mismatch against both LBs and DBs while still being a plus blocker was the cornerstone of Andy evolving to this current offense.

The offense doesn’t tick - at all - without his skill set. That’s not true for the defense.
This isn’t to disparage Chris Jones’ ability, Aaron Donald was once in this same situation. The Rams decided to build the team around him, not just placing him into it.

The Chiefs didn’t take that path, whether they keep Jones or not, the team isn’t as reliant on him as others.
