I shot from 240 to 1140 followers 🚀

It all started with a tweet by @vgr

He was talking about how fun it was to have an audience. And he shared how he got his:

HIGH VOLUME SHITPOSTING

So I tweeted 22 times for 22 days

Here's my story 👇

1/22
The only rule I made was no GIFs

My brain thinks in GIFs but they were too easy. Too safe

I wanted to break out of my shell

And that meant shiposting my own shit

2/22
I started the challenge with 2740 total tweets. About a year's worth. An average of 7.5 a day

If I fulfilled my challenge I would end up with 484 more: 3224

(My actual total was 1000 tweets higher. But I’m getting ahead of myself)

3/22
The first few days were easy

Turns out Twitter includes replies in your profile count. And I had a habit of replying to tweets in my feed

But I was posting more original tweets too

It was tougher coming up with those

4/22
On Day 3 I shared a coding chart I had saved

It was retweeted by a big account...

And blew up!

My first viral post! 😜

It was crazy watching it take on a life of its own. It gained over 3000 likes and 300,000 views

5/22
The weirdest part was that I had no idea ahead of time

I didn’t look at it and say, Yeah! This is going to do well

I didn’t know enough to know what was good

6/22
It was so much fun

I replied to most of the comments and retweets. And got a bunch more followers. Then things went back to normal

Around day 10 I decided the challenge was too easy. Most of my tweets were still replies to other people

I was too comfortable

8/22
So I resolved to not count replies to other people

I would have to publish 22 original tweets everyday for the next 10 days.

Ouch. This was more like it!

The next four days were uneventful. I posted all sorts of weird shit

9/22
Many of my followers are developers or coding students

I talked about code but also about science and philosophy and who knows what. I’m too embarrassed to scroll down my feed and check!

But nobody freaked out. Nobody canceled me

Though my follower count dipped a bit!

10/22
On day 13 I found myself stuck

It was getting close to midnight. I had written 21 tweets and had one more to go. But I was all out of witty or profound things to say

So I took a screenshot of an old iPhone note

People loved it!

And shared it like crazy

I had a flood of comments telling me how inspiring it was to them

It felt wonderful that such a dark time in my life was helping so many people

12/22
And the followers were fun too

My first viral tweet got 3000 likes but only 200 followers

This post got 2000 likes but over 600 followers!

I realized that people respond to personal stories. Funny memes are great but stories hit a nerve

13/22
As an afterthought, I shared it on LinkedIn too

Copy and paste

Turned out to be my best one ever! Ended up with nearly 10,000 likes

Once again, I was focusing on numbers

I was surrendering my idea of value

And letting the audience teach me

14/22
I then pulled a @garyvee and tweeted about making a viral LinkedIn post based on a viral tweet

That tweet was liked by Gary himself 🤩

So I grabbed a screenshot and tweeted that too!

(Re-using content is a cheat code)

15/22
I thought that was my peak

But a few days later I shared an image about imposter syndrome

Ironically, I almost didn’t post it. I was worried everyone knew the concept already!

It now has been retweeted 4000 times and has over 14,000 likes

Once again I had a flood of people saying how inspiring it was

Felt awesome!

I replied to hundreds of people but eventually had to throw in the towel

The tweet was seen by over a million people

All over the world 🌏

17/22
I found it interesting how it spread

It started with my developer friends and did well in that part of Twitter

No surprise

But it broke into other circles too. One group it was super popular with was academics!

18/22
So what did I learn?

A lot!

But I think it boils down to one thing:

TWEET MORE

No matter your excuses. No matter your fears

TWEET MORE

19/22
Focusing on quantity

- improves your writing

- shows you want people like

- obliterates your perfectionism

- builds confidence

- increases your chance of going viral (most of my followers came from 3 tweets)

20/22
Also grateful I wasn't cancelled 😅

Growing up I was shy. I now try to view strangers as friends I haven't met yet

But mobs scare me!

Luckily my fears were not realized

Though I did have a couple guys tell me to take down a tweet. 😬 (didn't do it!)

21/22
Well. There's my 22 tweets for today

Challenge completed

Thanks for coming along on my weird adventure

Not sure what is next... but watch out!
