Gantt was a trailblazer for other Black elected officials, and wanted to spend more time with them on his retirement from the assembly. I'm told they were planning a huge party for him to thank him for his years of service. 2/
Gantt had kidney disease and had been in the hospital for about a week. His quick decline took many by surprise. Tonight they are remembering him as a civil rights champion and fierce advocate for the poor. Funeral arrangements have not been set. Watch for more on @News_8 at 11
