These @nytimes headlines are 39-years apart, yet the theme of GOP-backed voter intimidation remains unchanged.

How did we get here?

Fearing a loss in the â81 New Jersey gubernatorial election, the RNC launched a voter suppression operation under the guise of a âNational Ballot Security Force.â
Its mission: Intimidate Black and Hispanic voters. (2/13)
Under this plan, the RNC recruited an army of off-duty law enforcement officers to patrol Black and Hispanic precincts.
They sported revolvers, two-way radios, and black armbands.
They hung up large signs in and around polling places like this

The RNCâs plan worked. The Republican candidate for governor Tom Kean won by fewer than 1,800 votes.
@TheDemocrats then sued over the Ballot Security Forceâs egregious voter suppression tactics and their disenfranchising effects on Black and Hispanic voters. (4/13)

In â82 and then again in â87, the RNC entered into consent decrees with the DNC, barring the @GOP from engaging in voter intimidation efforts and other forms of voter suppression, like the ones it used in New Jersey. (5/13)

In 2017, the consent decree expired. For the first Presidential election in nearly four decades, the @GOP can engage in voter intimidation practices.
And we know they arenât holding back for 2020âŚ(6/13) https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/18/us/Voting-republicans-trump.html
. @realdonaldtrump & the @GOP know that when an election is on the line, suppressing the vote is their only chance of winning.

Itâs why the Trump Campaign and @GOP are investing $20 million in a voter suppression war chest to combat our voting rights lawsuits in court

Itâs why theyâre recruiting and training 50,000 âpoll watchersâ for this November to mount aggressive challenges at the polls in minority communities.

Itâs why @realdonaldtrump and the @GOP just sued in Pennsylvania to block the use of safe, secure, government-owned, absentee ballot drop boxes and to bolster their voter challenge program. And letâs be clearâRepublicans across the country arenât standing on the sidelines.
Take the recent actions from Iowa Republicans, who tacked on restrictive voting laws to the stateâs budget bill just after midnight

Or the hours-long lines weâve seen in primaries around the country. Itâs no coincidence that these lines are most frequently in Black and brown communities.
They are voter suppression in action. (12/13) https://www.democracydocket.com/2020/06/how-long-would-you-wait/

As Maya Angelou once said, âWhen someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.â
Almost 40-years later, Republicans are now saying the quiet part out loud. And Donald Trump is screaming it. (13/13)
