If you don’t believe in the concept of Greater Somalia, a united Somalia, my friend you need to question your Somalinimo. You need to question many things about your Somali identity you claim to hold near and dear. You need to accuse your own lenses..
(The way you view things) and most importantly it’s the ignorance within you that you need to hold most accountable. The Pre-colonialism era of Somalia, saw a practically stateless country in the sense that there was no institutionalized central government.
On the other hand one can argue there was a state as Somalis created their own socio-political systems under the banner of Islam, morals etc. There’s no doubt that Somalis thrived to a great extent living simple lives, which consisted of pastoralism(life of a nomad who herds livesto
No effective transport, no technology-they lived lives unique to them at the time. This pastoral lifestyle accompanied by being materially inadequate created a life encompassed by inadequacy at all levels of Politically, socially, economically This left Somalis with no choice but
to showcase allegiance to none but their own; tribal kingdoms and did not go beyond the perimeter of their own. They didn’t have to and it worked. They lived their lives not trying to compete with the outside world, all that mattered was living prosperous within their own...
Tight knit tribal kingdoms. During the colonial era, the Europeans had an agenda a both political and economic one. They bought two main things which was alien to the Somalis at the time; institutionalized governments and physical/cultural borders.
To justify their imperialistic motives and so called cultural superiority, they divided up Somali inhabited lands into 5 regions; Djibouti(French somaliland), in the north (British somaliland) and down south & East(Italian somaliland), Ogaden region was given to Ethiopia..
&NFD to Kenya. There’s no doubt Somalia’s conflicts and division bear the indelible marks of the regions former colonial powers. The borders created have become fault lines for conflicts to happen. The Europeans knew the Somalis were the most intelligent, especially the British..
Who colonized the north “A book was written on this, “The East African protectorate” where one of the colonial administrators is expressing a great deal of concern; puzzled whether they should go back or remain colonizing.
They knew trying to rule Somalia was not going to be an easy task. However Somalia, a country being of such geographic importance, their vision of power seemed far more imperative.
Between the 1880’s and 1960 “the colonial years”, Somalia was fought over many times between the Europeans themselves, a power struggle as they quickly realized the great potential this country could possibly hold. The Europeans were left with only one option. To divide and rule.
Tactics which were imposed and reinforced regularly causing clan conflicts and disagreements. Families and communities were divided and colonial administrations did not respect and protect the rights, dignity
and liberty of the colonised people.
Divide and rule is sadly a common method of imperialism which still exist in many parts of Africa today; especially Somalia. To go back to the colonial era, the British especially were known to favor some clans more than others, recruit them more and created imbalances in wealth
And resource distribution. Look at Somalia and it’s maritime dispute, the Kenyan president causing disagreements between Jubaland and and the federal government and there’s many more... other countries are taking advantage of a...
Corrupt and divided Somalia.Divided politically and socially under the banner of tribalism. We are rich in resources but rich for others.
Inshallah Somalis can one day understand that in division we’ll fall and in unity we’ll rise. As Muslims we should stay optimistic and never pessimistic. We need more heroes with pens and less with guns..
Less criticisms and more prayers inshallah. Somalia is one and inshallah we unite one day. Thank you if you got this far and welcome to my ted talk
