@divestucla is demanding that @UCLA honor the lives and futures of Black peoples—and all peoples—through withdrawal of affiliation with and resources to the #LAPD and #UCPD. Only through the breaking of these ties will the U begin to take #BlackStudy seriously.+
What the University & its racial brokers have offered instead is what should have already existed: some faculty and postdoc lines, staff, a bit of student and research funding, resource center, mental health providers... PLUS doubling down on a “Public Safety Advisory Council”+
While the hallelujah chorus howls, it’s worth noting that these are basic concessions that allow the U to continue investing only in themselves. That’s not transformative—it’s not even a challenge. They’re putting money back into their own elite pockets.+
The poverty of vision is staggering. With “ #abolition” on the lips of millions, some plead for descriptive representation and other reforms that allow the U to function as it always has. No Black student tuition moratorium, no service strikes, nothing for anyone beyond the U.+
This is not opposition to better working conditions (although nothing in these reforms were articulated as such). It is, rather, a demand for accountability to and care for more than oneself and one’s professional class. #abolition Onward divestment.
