So, I went back to one of my old Dilbert books to see if I just missed something.

But it's still genuinely funny, often insightful. Yes, it always had a smug technocratic streak.

But I think the Scott Adams story is more about the crazification of Fox News America.
There are millions of otherwise intelligent people like Scott Adams who used to be normal(ish), certainly with some problematic prejudices but also a lot of reasonable kindness, who have been inducted into a crazed political cult.

It has happened to grandparents across America.
Yes, the reply guys will point out that guys like Adams and all these Fox News grandpas had Bad Views, benefited from structural racism and now they're afraid of things changing, etc.

And yes, that's right. But something else is going on, too. This is a radicalizing cult. /3
Under normal circumstances when people with prejudices are confronted with a changing society, they adapt mostly quietly to fit in.

Only now do you see "Obama will round us up into Jade Helm camps" and "Biden will hunt and kill Republicans" mainstreamed like this. /4
The Adams who is writing these tweets isn't the same Adams who wrote Dilbert when it was funny, any more than a grandparent who joins Scientology or the Jehova's Witness is the same parent after 10 years of indoctrination.

Because that's what this is: a cult. /5
We have to confront directly what this cult is doing to mostly older, mostly white, mostly male America (and Britain and Australia.)

This is the cult that Rupert Murdoch built, above and beyond the baseline Southern Strategy politics. We need scaled deprogramming. /6
Anyway, I don't know exactly *how* we go about it. Negative media effects and conspiracy theories are very hard to unwind.

But we have to start confronting it directly--both to save these people if possible, and at the very least save ourselves from them. /end
