1) At the very least, society can try getting history correct. The war did not "begin" over slavery, The south was seceding from the union in a protest to taxation. 2) started grumbling over the cost of the war in death and monies that Lincoln cleverly brought up the slavery issue to rally the northern populace behind the cause. It worked. The Civil war began on April 12, 1861.

4) United States and "recasts" the Civil War as a fight against slavery. At some point in time, schools quit teaching the true facts around the Civil War. Those southern generals were fighting not to keep slavery but to oppose the high taxation!
5) The southern populace has the right to honor and revere those men who fought valiantly against taxation without proper representation. Remind you of another war perhaps? That is what the American Revolution was about.
