I Got Fat Shamed by the Gym Manager: A Thread
As some of you know, I used to be quite athletic before I burnt out (or suffered #moralinjury, whichever term you like). I particularly enjoyed long distance running and triathlon training. However... 1/

In the past 2 years I gained 16kg due to a vicious cycle. I developed insomnia
I was tired
I couldnāt exercise
made me more depressed
worsened my insomnia. The sleep meds also made me gain weight (some made me ravenous, some made me drowsy so I couldnāt exercise) 2/

Needless to say, when you gain 16kg moving is a lot harder on your body frame (especially if youāre small). And you look different. I wish people didnāt think fat = unfit, and skinny = fit. This is not true, and itās much better to be fat but fit than the other way around 3/
Anyway, I am certified to be a trainer and the gym manager thought I had a good personality to teach group fitness classes and asked if I would be interested. I said yes. However she specified, not āBody Attackā (aerobics) because āyouāre too bigā. You need to be āskinnyā 4/
She looked at me and suggested I teach Body Pump (weights)
Okay... Iāve had this all my life. Even when Iāve been āskinnierā Iāve always had people comment on my muscles. Iāve had big calves from ballet and triple jump since I was a little girl. This is nothing new 5/

The point I want to make is that people in the fitness industry need to stop being so exclusive. Aerobics is not just for skinny people. In fact my fave Body Attack instructor is super fit & has massive muscles
Iād hate to think that a gym manager wouldāve discouraged her 6/

Iāve had the same thing in yoga. A yoga teacher told me Iām not skinny enough to do certain poses (lmarichyasana D)
Yes, certain body types are more suitable for certain movements but the most important thing is to move in the first place. Do whatever exercise you love
