[PENALTY ANALYSIS]. Barcelona 2-2 Atletico. Yes, this is a new segment where I will try to explain how I predicted Costa will miss the penalty and how I knew that Saul might go for the same direction for his 2nd penalty. In the game, 4 times the penalty was taken by 3 different..
Players. Messi, Costa, Saul(×2). Despite Ter Stegen saving the penalty, Costa's penalty was called off due to Ter Stegen coming out of the goal line which was recalled and this time Saul took the resulting penalty.
Costa penalty analysis-Costa is a right-footer and right footers are usually comfortable in scoring the penalties to the opp of their preferred foot(i.e left over here). So was Costa. Costa's last three penalties in the league were all on the left side. 2 out of 3 were scored.
But this time he thought of shooting on the right side but Ter Stegen saved it. Now how did I got to know were Costa will shoot?. Look at the image and Costa's body posture. Here, Costa is taking a runup kind of centrally and his body is near to erect. Giving a clue he will shoot
Centre or on the right side. But to be clear I went through 2 of the penalty clips of his earlier matches.See his position. He is kind off towards extreme left hinting he will shoot on the left side and he did exactly the same. Both the time, he shot on the left side of the goalpost
The S in the above images was were he was standing against Stegen. To give a more clear perspective see this. In the 1&2 image, his left leg leans on the extreme right to give his body the balance to shoot the n extreme left. 3rd image shows his left leg is placed central to ball
Saul Penalty analysis: when Costa's penalty was called off, Saul took the penalty. Saul scans the right side but while kicking the ball, his face is towards the left deceiving Ter Stegen to dive on Saul's left(Stegen's right). But how and why did he do that?
So again I went through his earlier penalty clips. Both of them were against Madrid, one was during Ucl 2016 finals and other Supercup finals. Both of the time, he hits it on the left of the post. During Ucl finals, it resulted in the goal but during Supercup, it hit the sidepost
Look at 1,2,3 images and specifically observe the highlighted part(his lower body). Whenever he shoots on the left, his lower body is like 50°-60° approx towards the right. But look at the 3rd pic, his lower body and both his legs are leaned like 80° to bend the ball on the right
Messi penalty analysis-Look here, even before Messi reaches like halfway to the ball, Oblak's body says that he will dive very early on the right and he actually did the same. He committed way too early, killing even the slightest chance of saving Messi's panenka
There are 2 ways on how Messi takes his penalty. The common in both the patterns is he looks on the right and in the same time thinks on where he will score. So the first way is, he will look on the side he will score while shooting and the second he will look to the ground
Messi has missed penalties while going through both the patterns but most of the times, he will miss when he uses the first way(i.e-looking while shooting). So again, I saw two of his penalties when he was looking while shooting. Both the times, the keeper got it right and saved
But last night he applied the 2nd way(looking to the ground). This way he confused Oblak and Oblak got it wrong. Messi might have seen Oblak committing early during the start of runup and thought of trying a panenka. During decisive times, he has usually opted the right side
Saul 2nd penalty: Look at this picture. Saul used the same right side and this time Ter Stegen correctly saw his lower body tilting towards the right. This time, Ter Stegen saved it but the ball slipped through his hands resulting into a goal and ATM were level on scores.
The reason I think Saul chose to hit on the same direction was the penalty miss during Supercup against Real. For a left-footer, shooting on his left side is difficult. So to not take any risk of missing the chance, he went for the lower right side of the net
To give a background, I was a GK for 7 years in a game called Rollball(handball on roller skates). So, throughout those years, I minutely studied how the body or players react during penalties. That's why I can predict most of the time, on which side the player will score.
For Example-Griezmann, Hazard, Neymar never use power shots, they jump before kicking the ball confusing the GK which side they will score. I am mostly right on which side they will score, since I know how they manipulate opp gk.
