Two recent international consensus statements in Gastro and J Hep say so.
I believe I was first to suggest this "new" name in a Gastro paper in 2005!
Anyone knows earlier reference so I stop gloating?

Why "Metabolic Fatty Liver Disease"?
Evidence in that 2005 Gastro paper still rings true:
Should be "Metabolic" because metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and obesity are contributors
Should not be "nonalcoholic"
it also occurs in etoh, hcv etc

What is the equivalent of "alcohol" in NAFLD?

I think this Hepatology article is a more nuanced: they think the change to MAFLD is "premature".
But Drs. Younossi, Rinella and Sanyal also co-authored the Statements recommending the change!
