I think what’s most disturbing about many of the comments to @Datin_TripleD’s “lack of appreciation for lyricists” statement is that most Chh fans seem to have scales that are totally dependent on the scales of the mainstream
Yea true, most mainstream “top 10” success is based on artists who aren’t heavy lyrically and are “vibe” driven...but that doesn’t count for artists like Cole, Kendrick, Royce etc...that also doesn’t count for the “second tier” stars who are heavy lyrically that have great succss
My point...I believe our identity is mistakenly rooted in mainstream...we follow their rules of what’s “Hot”, “Relevant”, “Good”...we haven’t created anything unique to us, up and including how we rate music and how we celebrate talent. We get all our cues from other places..
I remember when Reggaeton first popped...I hated it initially, but it was driven by a fan base that was focused totally on pushing forward, now its an undeniable force..same for K pop and other unique styles of music...Fans created the narrative they wanted the world to have..
My last sentiment..Chh has some of the greatest lyricists in hip hop history...that’s not bias, that’s just real...that being said...can we blame these lyricists from moving on to more “appreciative” places if their talents aren’t resonating with Chh..
If their content remains the same, their walk remains the same...should they be labeled negatively for repositioning? Honest question... honest answer on my part, in any other circumstance a repositioning would be considered intelligent...
