Thanks, everyone who didn't enforce safety regulations at restaurants and bars! Congrats, everyone who packed in to those establishments without masks! You are the reason 19 California counties can't have nice things.
Since this is low-key blowing up, some blanket answers:
Protests do not seem to have been major contributors to spread. The virus is 19x more likely to spread indoors, and any increase in spread was offset by people staying home. This is squarely on the people who packed bars. https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/06/24/us/coronavirus-cases-protests-black-lives-matter-trnd/index.html
Here is the study showing that the virus is 19x more likely to spread in a closed (i.e. indoor) environment: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.02.28.20029272v1
If you're skeptical of any of the above, you can download data off public health department sites and analyze for yourself. That's what it's there for.
I don't normally link to blog posts as authoritative sources, but this one is exceptionally well-documented. https://www.erinbromage.com/post/the-risks-know-them-avoid-them
Data point: 83% of bars and restaurants in Los Angeles County did not follow safety guidelines. https://laist.com/latest/post/20200627/80-percent-of-LA-restaurants-not-following-coronavirus-guidelines
Trying to respond to as many people as I can, but here's a tip: If you want to argue about numbers and causes, include the source for your data - ideally an academic or health stats site, not something you saw on Facebook (unless it's from an academic or health stats site)
