I used to work at a liquor store that was one of busiest private stores in BC. One Sunday, about ten minutes after I started a closing shift, a woman drove her SUV through the wall of our Australian wine section.
It was just after 3 pm, which is the start of the busy period at all liquor stores. For some reason though, only one customer was in the store. He was looking in the beer coolers, and even though they were clear glass, had the door open, which acted as a shield.
I was standing at the door to our walk-in cooler, talking to our fridge guy about what needed to be stocked first. When the SUV burst through the wall, we both thought stacks of beer had fallen over in the fridge, but quickly noticed the gaping hole in the wall.
We ran out front, and our fridge guy had the presence of mind to lock both doors so no one else could come in. I picked up the phone to call 911 as the customer was checking on the driver, who was uninjured.
After the quick 911 call, I also called the GM of the store, which was one of the more ridiculous calls I’ve ever had to make.
“Hi, uh, you should probably get here fast. A car drove through Australia.”
“What? In the store? Omg. Be right there”
Somehow arrives 6 minutes later
Meanwhile, our awesome fridge guy & other employees were preventing customers from trying to enter the store through the gaping hole.
“I just need to get my 6 pack. Just sell it to me, it’s no big deal. I can walk around the mess”
The SUV pushed two islands full of wine forward at least ten feet. In total, about 928 bottles of wine were ruined, either completely smashed or wrecked from flying glass & other debris. The surveillance video of this episode was amazing. We had like, 8 camera angles.
The woman drove through the wall due to driving too fast for road conditions. It was the first day it had lightly rained in September, after a very dry summer. She was turning left, hydroplaned and then over corrected, heading straight towards the store.
She passed over a curb, a sidewalk, and garden and another curb, and somehow missed hitting structural beams by inches.
