MAKING YOUR HOME A FORTRESS- PART 1

With current state of events...

I wouldn't blame you if you were feeling under prepared for whatever wackiness is to come in the back half of 2020 & in 2021.

So rather than being caught...

with your pants down.

Let's go over some strategies on how a regular guy can prepare their home in event of catastrophe.

I will cover some things that are geared towards the wealthy/those with large assets towards the end but I recognize that most don't fall into that camp.

Also a quick point:

This is NOT a post about building your bunker for the apocalypse/natural disasters.

I am strictly referring to home defense against potential intruders/active scenarios that might play out.

LEGALITY

Check with your local laws - usually most places have a *Fortified Buildings Act* to see what has to be followed/complied with.

Rule of thumb - any traps that impede law/fire/ambulance are illegal and also if a trap does injure someone.

BUT

I will say this...

I don't have booby traps set up in my home.

BUT I HAVE ALL THE EQUIPMENT TO DO SO.

Risks:

- Injuring self or family
- Likely illegal & face fines or prison
- Strong Intruders will see it as a challenge

The idea is - news travels faster than people. You will likely have

.. some warning from state/news authorities that break-ins/looting are rising or a state of emergency.

Strong fortifications are not necessarily for the garden variety burglar. They are for a clear event that might decimate your property if you do absolutely nothing.

In short - have the supplies ready, know how to set it up quickly, but DON'T until you can feel the horde coming for your doorstep.

Grandpa Scarface over here has the right idea but if it's gotten to that point - there's a few more things he could have done in advance.

But I digress.

BASICS for city bros

1. Install motion detecting lights
2. Beware of dog sign
3. Monitored home security system (great for families)

I don't have a monitored system but that's cause I don't need a company to watch how badly I would fuck somebody up.

4. LOCKS

Locks will not stop anyone who is truly determined but they buy you a little extra time to perhaps open the safe or get something set up.

I encourage:

A Door Chain & Flip Lock (very cheap)

Provides Double Protection Security for Doors

If you have more time in your hands - then please consult with a local locksmith to tailor your needs and find the proper set up for your type of doors.

5. SECURITY CAMERAS

- Place them high where they can't be reached (9ft)
- Wide Vision Range is key around corners

- Not enough lighting , camera's can't catch much unless you splurge for a particularly high quality one so add good lighting to save some money.

- Plan carefully , camera can do one thing at a time. Place them in a way where one camera ends, another is doing a different task

Example: One camera catches the break-in at the front door from outside and another is right inside the door to get a really good face capture (if you have high ceilings).

6. BALLISTIC WALLS & WINDOWS

While I don't think everyone needs fibreglass panel walls - I encourage..

people to switch out their windows.

Window entry is a very common approach for the initial breach and gives riot based attackers some confidence.

If you have a glass heavy mansion - then this is pretty much mandatory.

I would only get ballistic walls if you can afford it and have something truly valuable like a rare historical antiquity collection - fortify that particular room with fibreglass walls or some Ballistic Concrete.

And even then, unless you are...

so valuable/wealthy that machine gun fire might actually be a a tactic that an organized group/your enemies might use...

If you do: Get something like Lvl 8 Armorcore fibreglass paneling.

However,

Some quality thick walls are fine for most of you.

The invisible

This is a 50-50 last ditch effort if you fear for the home itself. I don't suggest this unless you truly have nothing else.

- Board up your windows
- Knock over some plants and put dirt everywhere
- Get a can of graffiti and squiggle on the panels a bit

- Essentially make your property look like it's already been hit.

There is a problem with this however...

If it's an upscale/nice suburb neighborhood - looters will see opportunity, not a deterrent.

Further - homeless might see it as abandoned and try to break in..

for a night's sleep.

I really don't recommend this strategy but I bring it up because frankly...you never know.

Now let's move to the inside:

7. TACTICAL WALLS / SAFE

I love this company to death.

I highly encourage that you have at least one up high in a hallway/high traffic area (behind a mirror perhaps)

This will give you quicker access if you suspect that there someone at your door any minute...

Instead of having to run down to a gun room, spin the vault, load the gun, walk back up, etc

I prefer:

Door --> Mirror --> Gun

And trust me when I say...

NO INTRUDER is suspecting the coffee table.

Intruder tries to enter living room window --> Coffee Table --> dead guy

Quick Caveat: Think LONG & HARD before putting this anywhere with children present.

Sure you can put safety's on everything, trigger locks, unloaded, etc.

(It would be impressive if a kid got through all that)

But they are still children. The mirror safe is enough.

Alright, now let's go over some tactical advice. Your greatest weapon is your brain in a home invasion.

1. Have a safe word for home occupants - "Red Wolf", etc

2. Have a safe room if you can- with a firearm

3. Think like an intruder, what are your home's weak points?

4. Have a phone in your safe room and probably on you as well.

5. Befriend a neighbor - if you can phone your neighbor and can see what's happening from the outside - it gives you a clear picture as to how many people you might be up against.

6. Stay in that room until help arrives if you have phoned for backup.

If it's truly just you, nobody is coming, etc

Then get some firearms training - learn how to use cover and aim from cover (I will likely cover this in the future)

I will also cover crude traps & defenses..

The fatal funnel

If you going to shoot a man within a room - hide behind the bloody door , this will give you time to see who it is and surprise attack.
