I just commented on the newly proposed asylum regulations, which basically strip the principle of asylum of any meaning whatsoever.

If these regulations go into effect, asylum is, for most people seeking protection, as good as roadkill, at least for remainder of Trump admin.

We have until July 15 to comment, and the government is obligated to read all comments, so, again, go here and tell them why asylum is important: https://www.regulations.gov/comment?D=EOIR-2020-0003-0001
I had a lot of thoughts about the regs, but commented mostly on the 14-day transit limit, which would deny someone asylum if they spent more than 14 days in a country during transit to the US.

It's a clear example of economic discrimination, and it's just absolutely galling.
If you're poor, it takes WAY more than 14 days to travel from anywhere but northern Mexico to US border, so all asylum seekers coming from C. America or further, and arriving via land, and screwed.

It's a clear attack against the poor, undercutting the basic concept of asylum.
If you're interested in reading more about asylum, I just wrote a book about its history, current US policy, and a few contemporary asylum seekers.
