normalized things that are actually ableist: a thread ( by someone actually neurodivergent )
here’s a little picture on what is neurodivergent just so you know 👍👍 i have adhd
making jokes about people having adhd when they’re hyper or distracted; not only does it make adhd people feel ridiculed for their symptoms, it also encourages that adhd only has two main symptoms and erases other struggles
saying “take a joke,” or making fun of someone for taking a funny situation seriously; a lot of neurodivergent people struggle with grasping humor in the same way that a neurotypical would and cannot tell when you are joking or serious, especially online.
saying you have ocd because you like to keep things clean; not only is it upsetting to make a joke out of really harmful symptoms, it also spreads misinformation that ocd is a disorder based solely around “cleanliness” when it is much more than that.
making fun of people because you think their interest is cringey; a lot of neurodivergent people have very passionate interests called hyperfixations which they turn to for comfort, and it’s really upsetting to be ridiculed for things they hyperfixate on.
saying people are suspicious or lying when they don’t maintain eye contact; it’s very hard for neurodivergent people, especially those with autism, to look people in the eye. normalizing that this is suspicious puts neurodivergent people in danger.
making addiction jokes when you see people taking medication for their disabilities; not only do some neurodivergent people need medication for their disabilities and feel upset when it is joked about, but addiction is not a joke and shouldn’t be used as one.
overlooking the r slur; the r slur targets those with learning / developmental disabilities, and refusing to hold people accountable for saying it because it’s “normal where they came from” is incredibly harmful to neurodivergent people.
getting angry when people don’t look at you when you’re having a conversation; a lot of neurodivergent people feel more at focus when they’re stimulating themselves with something else while in a conversation or at school, rather it be drawing / fidgeting / something else.
calling people lazy when they don’t get things done; the normalization of assuming people who cant get things done are “lazy” overlooks executive dysfunction, which is a big symptom of adhd but also can be a stand alone struggle.
typing in a hard to read way constantly, ( L1K3 TH15, like that ); not inherently ableist but hard to read for those with dyslexia and also difficult to understand for blind people using text to speech.
making fun of people’s tics; not only is it just mean, but people being made fun of could make them repress their tics which is very overwhelming and harmful.
here’s screenshots about what it means to be neurodivergent from a website i found!!
muting this now but my dms are open!!
i was also asked to add that making jokes about stuttering is harmful and upsetting to those with stutters!!
i also wanted to add ( a little late ) that making fun of fun of people for picky eating is harmful to people with autism or sensory processing disorder because they can be incredibly sensitive to certain textures or tastes.
