Abolish the Welsh Assembly Debunked - a thread
1. ‘’Devolution is too expensive’’
Truth: Including staffing, Assembly members, building costs, the Welsh Assembly costs only £58 million a year, while Westminster, on the other hand, costs the taxpayers over £428.3 Million. The cost of MPs alone was £181.6 Million. 1/
2. ‘’We have enough representation in Westminster’’
Wales only has 40 out of 650 seats in Westminster, Wales has had next to no input on the governance of the UK and Welsh MPs have been ignored+overruled like when all Welsh MPs opposed the drowning of Tryweryn but it still went.
WM has also proposed and made plans to change voting boundaries that would cut Welsh seats to 28 giving us less representation and input on the Union. 3/
3. ‘’We’ve tried Devolution and it has failed’’
Only the Labour Party has been in government in Wales, It is small-minded to attribute the shortcomings of one party to an entire political process.
4. ‘’Devolution is ineffective’’
Devolution has been very effective in helping local issues that have been neglected previously. Wales managing to lower its ‘R’ rating and keep deaths and infections at relatively low levels during the pandemic while England has over 45,000 dead.
5. ‘’No one really wants the Senedd’
50.30% of the Welsh electorate voted in favour of Devolution in 1997, and a further 63.49% voted in favour of expanding its powers in 2011. Polls have shown that only between 10-20% believe that Devolution has failed Wales.
