Rising seniors are going through a tremendous amount, as we all are. Most, if not all of them, are wondering what their learning environments will be like this fall. They imagined a senior year a certain way and will likely live something very different... (2)
In the vast majority of cases, they gain nothing applying today over, for example, August 1. Would they miss applying in ED or EA rounds? No. Would they miss scholarship opportunities? Also, no... (3)
College admissions can often create false urgency where non exists just so we can count heads as early as possible. But do we consider the effects and stresses of pushing students to act early when unnecessary?... (4)
Your incoming freshmen also need your team and resources more than ever. The longer you work with two classes at once, the less direct attention you can offer a specific group... (5)
Also, think about your admissions counselors. THEY. ARE. TIRED. Constantly hearing “avoid melt!” and “secure deposits!” now paired with “lets start getting some apps for next cycle!” helps them how exactly?... (6)
Have you considered the pressure a July 1 open puts on school counselors? They do SO much for students and for us. They do NOT need to get emails or calls or DMs saying “X college said the app is open and I should submit docs as soon as possible!” This helps no one... (7)
I know there’s pressure for enrollment managers to produce and show progress and secure numbers and tuition revenue. But we also need to remember the impact of our work and that doing the right thing MEANS something. We can’t change or fix everything. But this, we can. (8)
So if you find yourself with an open app for Fall 2021, and that toothpaste is out of the tube for this cycle, start thinking about how you can move your app open date back next year. There’s always room to do better. #EMChat #Fin (9)
