PSA: cultural appropriation is real. I’m not talking about white women with braids (that’s still important tho). I’m talking about hearing people using sign language. A THREAD.
@OfficialJA10 explains cultural appropriation with Paddy Ladd - a deaf activist & academic: https://www.facebook.com/bbcseehear/videos/2658697750895582/?
@VCRJ90 visually shows the difference when a hearing person attempts to use sign language to gain views and recognition. It’s a joke: https://www.facebook.com/VCRJ90/videos/897550497384436/?
@VCRJ90 also shows why cultural appropriation isn’t cool: https://www.facebook.com/VCRJ90/videos/530991077590203/?
@VCRJ90 made a “response” video to a hearing woman who did a sign song cover to @KreptandKonan song which was not sign language AT ALL: https://www.facebook.com/1966304943658597/posts/2656864051269346/?vh=e&d=n
Anyone who says “awww but they’re learning” EXACTLY that’s the whole point. When you learn a new language, you don’t go and make videos for profit and claim it’s for the deaf community. WE DONT NEED YOUR HELP.
