SBC Thread… Our problem isn't conservatism but apathy.

More than 70% of SBC churches that die each year are in communities w/ over 100k in population. Much of our evangelistic problem in the SBC has more to do w/ being apathetic towards reaching our neighbors than anything else
There’s not a great deal of difference in the conservative nature of our churches. We all hold firmly to the BFM2K.

Our prob isn’t as much what we believe as much as it is what we do with those beliefs.
Many churches are apathetic to their duty “to seek constantly to win the lost to Christ by verbal witness undergirded by a Christian lifestyle, and by other methods in harmony with the gospel of Christ.” (BFM2K; XI)
Churches are being planted & growing in various ways (NAMB, State Conventions, & Churches). Established churches across the nation are growing rapidly. Why?

Because they’re taking the Gospel into their communities.
Because they understand their responsibility to reach the lost
But the SBC is still declining? Why? Because for many, the comfort of the status quo reins supreme.

They resist reaching the lost. Why?

Perhaps they don't know how to reach their community
Perhpas they don't want to reach their community
Perhaps they like church the way it is
If your church doesn’t look like it’s community, is it being effective at it's mission? As for me & the church I lead, I want people to see 2 things:

1) The Gospel of Jesus Christ on display
2) A community of believers that feels & looks like the community we’re called to reach
If all our churches took hold of that mentality, we wouldn’t be talking about declining stats or levels of conservatism. We’d be too busy winning the lost in our neighborhoods.

We need God to break us of apathetic, happy-go-lucky Christianity. When that happens... look out!
