Been thinking a lot about how lived exp. is being valued more now (good) but the way that I see it being used in the sector can sometimes feel tokenistic or exploitative (not good)... (1)
...if you are invited to someone’s table, it’s still their table. There have been conscious (and unconscious) decisions about who is invited and what power is being shared before you even show up. (2)
Young people are addressing this by ‘building their own tables’ and driving meaningful change. I honestly think this is the way to creating better systems: by handing power over to the people who are impacted by them. (3)
The only thing is when you do this you can suddenly be plunged into setting up an organisation/project that requires loads of behind the scenes admin (hello millions of policies you now have to write). Which can feel overwhelming and takes you away from your main focus (4)
So if you are a young person ‘building your own table’ and are wondering about the admin things e.g. dealing w/ funders, building excel sheets to track your budget- I’m thinking of running a (virtual) space to share knowledge & experiences to help you grow your projects. (5)
If this is of interest, let me know, and let me know what ‘boring org stuff’ you’d like to talk to peers about. I’m not an expert at all but have had some experience of these things and would like to be a resource for you if helpful. Let me know here or DM.
Just want to clarify in in 4th tweet ‘you’ refers to young people creating their own projects/orgs.
