/ The loss of 1,700 jobs at Airbus is terrible news and is part of a concerning trend of job losses across the manufacturing sector. For weeks we have been warning government about the need for sector-specific support for our industries, including in aerospace.
/ The aerospace sector has faced acute difficulties as a result of COVID-19. These are high-skilled and well paid jobs in communities right across the UK. We cannot afford to lose these jobs and this skilled workforce, which will play a crucial role in transitioning to net zero.
/ Without providing the tailored support so desperately needed, the govt is risking the future of our world leading aerospace industry and the green transition. Compare the response to that of the Welsh Government, who have introduced a 4-step plan to support Airbus in Wales. https://twitter.com/itvwales/status/1278293449448599552
/ France have provided €15bn for aerospace and aviation, Germany are extending their furlough. Here, all we have so far is warm words and a cliff edge to the furlough in October. The absence of strategic support is clear. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/comment/help-for-the-uk-aerospace-industry-is-stuck-in-a-holding-pattern-m0rhr2w8m
/ There is a severe risk of a wave of job losses in manufacturing. It is time for government to step up, recognise the severe danger this poses to our economy and provide the support needed.
