it’s also ok if you can’t access second hand shops/have to buy fast fashion as a last resort
capitalism sucks and it’s pretty much impossible to escape but make sure that whatever you buy you use for a long time to reduce wastage https://twitter.com/siierradeaton/status/1278043541768462337
there’s also a very good thread/video somewhere (I’ll try link it) that explains the privilege of thrifting and how ppl from a lower socioeconomic background are less likely to be able to thrift through thousands of articles of clothing to find something that fits them
also if you are thrifting please don’t resell your items at a hiked up price on Depop/other apps because this increases the demand and means that afforadble clothing becomes unaffordable for those who heavily rely on second hand shops for their clothes
if fast fashion is your last resort try to look for clothing that is sewn well by checking seams and whether or not there are any imperfections, i tend to buy stuff that’s slightly more expensive in sales when they’re marked down and they usually last a little longer
also be critical of what you’re purchasing, if it’s something you don’t really need or you’re going to wear once ask yourself is this a purchase I need - instead try to buy second hand and once you’re done with it you can sell it on or even flip it into something else
never buy off Shein/Romwe/Wish - the price point is the same as if you were going to buy a high street brand and the air miles needed to deliver your order increases the carbon footprint too. Also their products are terrible quality and you can tell by the materials they use!
try to go for more organic materials like cotton or cotton blends, the more manmade the material is the more uncomfortable it is to wear and the cheaper it feels/looks
Invest in higher quality basic garments that you’ll wear often! They’ll need to be durable and last longer so the less you need to replace them the better for your wallet in the long run!
