Today's #WednesdayWritingTips are all about WHY.
Not about character, or plot, or structure, or concept...
Stripping it right back: WHY.
1) Why are you writing this story?
This is an incredibly important question.
Because it's marketable?
Because agents are looking for this kind of stuff?
Because everyone else is?
But is it...
Because I HAVE to tell this story.
#WednesdayWritingTips
When you write a story that your heart is in, that you believe in, that you want to shout out to the world, THAT is a story which is going somewhere.
Your passion will be apparent. Your writing will be better. When you pitch it, you will be more confident.
#WednesdayWritingTips
Sometimes we have to write things which are 'ok', which will sell, which will pay bills.
BUT make sure you still give time to the stories you care about. Give yourself permission to spend time on them. And don't tailor everything to someone else's brief.

2) Why will other people want to read this story?
Think about the themes and message of your story. At the heart of it, are you exploring what it means to be human? Are you exploring themes that people can identify with, think about and care about?

3) Why now?
Why is your story appropriate NOW? This is another great reason for a story being picked up off the pile. Why will this chime with people NOW? Not necessarily in relation to covid-19, but in these times generally. Why will we care about it NOW?
