What is going on in football today?

The central defensive midfielder position
The woman/man who sits at the base/deeper of a 433/352/442 diamond

{A THREAD}
We are going to highlight the way big teams use the central defensive midfielder position in the modern game today
How it adapted from the way it used to be to suit the needs a player has to fulfill when playing in this position today
First we have to understand the way big teams play. Trying to see how they approach games.
A big team is a team that represents the best team(s) in the top five leagues of Europe (e.g PSG, Barca, Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Bayern, athletico and Liverpool FC)
They tend to play to dominate the match
To control the game
In summary to impose their game on the opposition and to make them play to their own strengths

And this lead to the attacking midfielders being a big part in the modern game

But someone had to stay back to defend....
So they developed the defensive midfield position to be an extra man/woman in midfield.
This lead to managers wondering how CDMs were meant to be moulded and deployed in game.
They used to be made to be best at distribution especially when trying to play in wingers from deep
This was when teams always fought to win control over the middle of the pitch.
Now the smaller teams adapted by the use of counter attacks to be able to get a result against these teams

Hence the need for a CDM that offers great defensive cover to stifle counter attacks...
And also be able to play out from the back was then used to counter this
More like the "ball playing defensive midfielder"
Coupled with the emergence of how crucial for every team to have attacking fullbacks someone had to stay and do more defending when everyone is attacking
Fast forward to nowadays where these teams have to always be playing against teams that want to counter attack against them rather than try and continue to fail to win the midfield battle due to these teams being naturally superior technically.
If you do not agree with this approach then look at the teams that have won the champions League trophy in the last decade
All used defensive minded DMs who anchor the defensive third while the rest of the team attack
Now looking at the context of Chelsea football club
We love jorginho. He has a great mentality and is world class in the right system
But as the type of defensive midfielder we need and a big team needs he's just not there due to many factors you might know
Most especially his defensive ability especially when defending counter attacks
Last season Chelsea's biggest problem was defending counters and setpieces

Now we haven't played him we are suddenly defending counter attacks better and seeing out results better
We aren't playing the type of football that suits jorginho. He isn't a bad player. But he isn't what we need rn. This confirms the interest in the likes of Ndidi and rice. Together with the sudden emergence of kante learning the CDM role

But I don't mind contradicting views
RTS and likes appreciated
