Someone PLEASE rewrite the high school curriculum to teach life skills like how to write a check, cook a meal, wash clothes, change a tire/oil, how to dress for an interview, first aid/CPR, etc & make it a REQUIREMENT instead of an elective!
We're sending kids out into the world & the only thing they know how to do is analyze literature & a bunch of math formulas that most WON'T EVER USE in their chosen career path. They need these real life skills because they don't teach this in colleges either.
And let's be realistic, many kids graduate & don't go to college anyway (college isn't for everyone & ISN'T needed for every career path, despite what people might say) & we're sending them out into the world not knowing how to do basic things or how to take care of themselves!
I know, I know, a lot of yall are gonna read this & think, "It's not my job to do all that, that's their parents' jobs to teach them how to take care of themselves." Cmon now, yall know as teachers we are just as big of an influence, if not more, than some of their parents.
For some, we are their last line of defense before they get thrown out to this crazy & chaotic world we live in. We need to get them ready for life, not just get them "college ready." Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
