I am a dice nerd. I love dice. But in almost every game, dice are used in one of a very small handful of ways. @9thLevelGames did something wildly unique with their dice mechanics this year and it was SO exciting and interesting and I LOVE THESE GAMES SO FREAKING MUCH

Mazes has so many fascinating mechanics that solve so many issues I have with dungeon crawls. The treasure mechanic is brilliant. The darkness mechanic to add grit and danger as the adventure progresses. Magic is freeform and cinematic while still providing mechanical heft.
I love a game that looks you in the eye and says "look. we all know why we're here, so let's cut out all the fat and get to the stuff we really want to enjoy." Mazes does that. It doesn't want to be a slice-of-life game or a game about character development. Adventures or bust.

This is a game that is both kid-friendly and grownup-accessible. The writing is whip-smart, but the rules are easy enough for any kid to grasp. You never get hurt--in failure, you learn Lessons that can be utilized for future victories.
And at the crucial moment? You can band together and do what every good team of heroes does in a cartoon: you can sing about it!
