In Ezekiel 14, the elders of Israel come to ask for a word from YHWH even though he says they "have taken their idols into their hearts" (v.3). God says he will answer--not the way they want, though. He will expose their heart and their idols. He will set his face against him.
God sees through their syncretistic spirituality. And he has no interest in subsidizing the worship of other gods.
The wild is part is that he says he may even answer someone through the lips of a prophet by putting a lie in their mouth to expose their idols. Essentially, he allows false prophets to speak comforting words that we want to hear about sin & then let the consequences play out.
If you really want to lie to yourself about sin and idolatry and justify it theologically, God may just let you.
