There's a valuable lesson watching companies put out statements in support of BLM and Pride and then get torched by their own employees. You can't refuse to have the necessary internal conversations around race, privilege, and inclusiveness, and then be surprised at the pushback
We're taught to avoid "controversial" or "divisive" topics in the workplace, which benefits the majority and those already in power. If you really want to know how your company stacks up on these issues, you need to go out of your way.
Ask hard questions. Listen to hard answers. Make it clear where your company stands internally BEFORE you take a stance publicly. If you don't, you'll look foolish making public statements while getting torched from within by your own employees.
One of the best things that social media has brought is the ability for employees to clap-back at tone deaf companies for trying to benefit from the APPEARANCE of inclusiveness without doing any of the actual work.
It's one thing to ignore the voice and needs of your employees on issues like equality and inclusion. It's a completely different thing to skip any internal reckoning on these topics while trying to score PR points.
