Dr Dan O’Neill: “we need to start to move away from what the owner wants, and towards what the pet needs”

Just because people ‘want’ pets which appearances that compromise their welfare, they do not necessarily have the right to have/breed such an animal #VCUFAW2020
Should we be moving away from use of the term ‘pet’ and towards ‘companion animal’?

Should we use ‘guardian’ instead of ‘owner’?

The language we use can help to set the frame for how perceive & judge relationships.
Dr O’Neill: “illness and awareness of illness are two separate things, one is related directly to the animal & it’s welfare whilst the other is related to the guardian/owner & their ability to detect illness”

Delay in identifying & treating illness is a serious welfare concern.
