I think something we don’t talk about enough is the difference between scary pain and non-scary pain, & the difference between pain we know will go away & pain we worry never will end

Scary pain is when we worry something is WRONG & we need to find out what it is.
Pain from an infection or injury that won’t heal on their own, or something we suspect we need intervention for

It hits different, because of the anxiety involved. Once we have antibiotics for the infection, the pain seems less even if it hasn’t changed yet.
Also, pain can seem a lot more overwhelming if we are worried it will never let up.

We can endure a lot of pain for short stretches if we know it’ll let up eventually

I don’t think people would get through shit like childbirth otherwise
I know medical science is aware of these phenomena. I’ve been in pain studies, and the questions they asked would indicate they know

But they seem to make zero effort to acknowledge patients’ humanity, our fears, and our fatigue around pain.
Pain is one of the easiest things to manage in most cases. Yet doctors tend to blame us for our pain, minimize our concerns, and refuse to help us. Medical workers see a lot of pain & it tends to make them jaded. They ascribe value to the ability to endure pain.
There is no value in enduring pain.

Suffering is not a virtue.

Medical workers of all people should know this. They’re supposed to be here to help.
