I think the thing that sux abt shipping Disco Horse is that shipping drama always existed. Ppl wanna act like it’s new but the reality is y’all prolly curated your experience w/o knowing it. The problem isn’t ppl being shitty, it’s that ppl confuse shipping w/ activism now.
Don’t get me wrong, ppl should never have been assholes over a ship or which fictional character someone likes. But y’all we need to stop acting like “oh back in the day there was no drama” bc there WAS. And there’s always gonna be, people are people and people are shitty.
We should be instead encouraging ppl to think abt WHO they are being critical of, and WHY, and maybe also not act like some niche fandom is really the target you wanna go after if you actually wanna be an activist.
Lrt is actually a v good thread abt this but got me thinking abt other threads I see abt the same thing I LARGELY agree with but do say “back then if we didn’t like we didn’t read” like maybe YOU didn’t, but ppl still did.... & still wrote anti-manifestos.
I know this, bc at one time I took part in it. Not dog-piling people or going into their threads & forums, not to the extent antis do now, but I wrote long rant posts about why x ship isn’t canon, why x ship is stupid. In the mid-2000s.
I was young & angry and as an adult I know now that I just didn’t know healthy outlets to let out steam. And that’s.... normal. I would encourage young ppl in fandom to sometimes try to stop & listen to fandom elders. Bc while some are patronizing, some were YOU once.
