July 1 is New Laws Day in Virginia and here's some of the gay ones:
- Conversion therapy banned
- LGBT discrimination banned
- New birth certificates with amended gender on request
- LGBT status added to hate crime law
- "Husband" and "wife" replaced w/gender-neutral terms in law
More new Virginia laws today:
- Marijuana possession decriminalized
- Discrimination against Black hairstyles banned
- Insulin cost hard capped at a maximum of $50 per month
- Local gov't employees can unionize now
- People can't be denied food stamps because of a criminal record
Even more new Virginia laws taking effect:
- Anyone can vote absentee now
- Voter ID repealed
- No-notice utility disconnection banned
- Payday loans kneecapped
- Kids can't be charged criminally with "disorderly conduct" at school
- "Good Samaritan" shield for overdose reporters
We're still going, new VA laws, guns:
- Background checks for *all* gun sales
- Lost/stolen guns must be reported
- "Red Flag" allowing courts to prohibit gun ownership on emergency basis
- One handgun a month limit
- Nobody subject to a permanent protective order can own a gun
Not done on Virginia laws:
- 60-day eviction ban for furloughed/laid-off employees
- Statute of limitations on sexual assault expanded to 20 years
- Waiting period + ultrasound requirement for abortions eliminated
- Minimum wage hike
- Employers can not ask about criminal history
Still going on Virginia law:
- Citizenship not required for ID/Drivers License
- School dress codes must be gender neutral
- New Virginia CO2 cap+trade and joined NE Regional Greenhouse Gas initiative
- Localities can impose plastic bag taxes
- Handheld phone while driving banned
additional Virginia law:
- New VA Passenger Rail Authority
- Full stop mandatory for drivers at crosswalks when a pedestrian is present
- Speed cameras OKd
- Target 2045 for 100% renewable energy
- Offshore wind generation permitted
- Nutrient water pollution standards tightened
This isn't even all of it but just so you know: we had legislative elections in *November* in Virginia, and voters installed a Democratic majority. That was all of *eight months* ago. And look what got done.

Your state's legislature *can* move quickly if it wants to.
