/ I am a mythology buff - especially the Mahabharat. Over the years, countless hours have gone into reading, watching, listening to and debating the original texts, some great and some sub-par translations, various versions and adaptations.
/ My son and I are skimming through the old BR Chopra TV series (within an hour we typically fast forward our way through 3-4 episodes). He is particularly excited to see the impressive Mukesh Khanna play his namesake (my son’s middle name is Bhishm).
/ Here are some observations on this epic (not just the TV show, but overall). Will keep adding to this thread over time:
/ This is a story of Satyavati’s dynasty and not Shantanu’s. Ved Vyasa was writing his family’s history. And Kunti adds another twist to this - the Pandavs are all demi-gods and not related to Satyavati at all. Why did our society not end up being matrilineal? A helpful chart:
/ Someone needs to write about the foster parents of the Mahabharat. Whether it is Yashoda and Nand or Adiratha and Radha - the story is full of the heartbreak of foster parents who did most of the heavy-lifting and got zero rewards.
/ I wrote the previous bit in a post on the various product manager archetypes in the Mahabharat (as an aside in the Arjun section): https://anshumani.com/the-product-managers-of-the-mahabharat/
