In the June 9th primary, Democratic voters in Cobb were asked 2 questions related to transit:

“Do you support a county wide one cent Transportation Special Sales Tax?”

&

“Do you support MARTA expansion into Cobb County?”

We analyzed the results. Here is an overview (a thread)
Support was mixed for a one cent transportation tax. 64% responded in support of a 1% transportation sales tax.

Some of the weakest support was in South Cobb, which makes you wonder if the broad “transportation” performed worse than “transit” language.
83% of Democratic primary voters said they supported MARTA expansion into Cobb.

83. Percent.

As expected, support is strongest in South Cobb and up the 75/Cobb Pkwy corridor, mixed in East Cobb and weakest in West Cobb.
We wondered what it would look like if we took Democratic support for MARTA and combined it with an estimate for Democratic voter share in a general election. We used the 2018 Governor’s election where Abrams received 54% of the vote. The results were very interesting...
This resulted in a “baseline estimate” of MARTA having 45% support when considering only Democratic voters.

This means we need a very low share of Republican voters (12%) to support MARTA to get over 50%.

As expected, support is strongest in South Cobb and up 75/Cobb Pkwy
This was great work done by our Research & Planning team and this will allow us to be more aggressive when we discuss MARTA with local politicians. A referendum is likely less than 2 years away and the discussion to join MARTA starts NOW!

Our research shows that there is support for MARTA in the county and our city and county leaders needs to start openly discussing joining a regional system. We also recognize that support is dependent on the sales tax amount and any referendum needs to be on the general ballot.
We truly believe transit is a bipartisan issue, and we hope voters realize the benefits MARTA and increased transit can bring to the county and its residents, workers, and visitors.

Improved transit benefits everyone, even those who do not use it regularly.
