If we were having a more generalised conversation, I would add that many writers are absolutely complicit in all the same processes of rule-making and code-enforcing around literature and publishing.
Indeed one of the most dispiriting things about the professional discourse I address in that thread is the extent to which so many writers have not only internalised it, but actually do a lot of the work of normalising it.
So if we *are* to tackle the impression of writing and publishing given to aspiring writers through social media, panel events, podcasts, blogs etc, it’s something we all need to think about. Many established writers police the borders just as fiercely as industry notables.
