Inconsistency’s part of the human plight. If you have an insatiable need to be disappointed, if it makes you feel better about yourself, if your favorite feeling is “caughtcha!”, you’re in good shape. Everybody eventually says the wrong thing or the right thing the wrong way.
What made Twitter the favorite medium to many of us was the expression of thoughts & ideas. We didn’t have to agree. We liked being forced to think, even if we came to our previous conclusions. At its best, Twitter functioned as a public square. But what will be its ruination...
... the absolute end of everything good about it, is for it to become utterly unforgiving. By that I mean, if no one can recover from being wrong, anyone worth hearing’s gone. If no one can say they messed up without being doubly shamed, everything good about it goes up in smoke.
Some of you are thinking it’s too late but that’s not true. There are plenty of people on this medium who aren’t trolls. Good thinkers. Generous hearers. I’m simply saying let’s spare Twitter from becoming a complete snake pit. If we keep canceling people, this’ll be a ghosttown.
