love how oxbridge doesn’t see access as a problem once you’re through the door. can we talk about how a week before my finals, i was told to use latin - a language i never had the opportunity to learn - to help in my french translation exam? would love to hear other‘s experiences

someone just sent me this:
i got told in first term that i would never be a good historian if i only spoke one language and that it was ridiculous i didn't know one already... having come directly from an underfunded state school that didn't even offer language a levels

also a special shout out for the public school boys who kept asking me when i’d been doing extra work or how i’d managed to trick the system when i got a first in first year, because it was inconceivable to them that someone who isn’t a man, state-schooled and northern could have
i think what students/profs who went to private school don’t get is that at state schools (even grammar schools like mine) you don’t choose which languages you take, which language classes will run at a level, and whether you can do latin or greek (mainly, they aren’t offered)
there’s also a gendered element to this. our partner school, the boys’ grammar, not only offered latin (and i think greek) but politics and philosophy gcse and a levels, which my school refused to offer. not because they couldn’t have; they didn’t think “women” needed them
i’m designing a questionnaire to get some clear stats and examples, probably use it to make a well-informed twitter thread or article. if you’re interested in taking part, please follow this thread (or my twitter if u want stale takes on queers and philosophy) for info x
