The PLA is as aware as the rest of the world that it hasn't been to war since the 70s. This is why its training scenarios often pit one brigade against another. In this article, it is claimed that a formation on the move with '1,000s of vehicles' was attacked by aircraft.
The force had to respond and establish air defence positions, the enemy craft used EW and other means to impede detection and targeting - the fighting lasted until nightfall at which point the AD units established fake positions and moved their weapons. http://www.mod.gov.cn/power/2020-06/26/content_4867264.htm
In a separate article, a communications brigade from the PLAAF conducted an exercise against an EW brigade. The report claims the exercise involved both teams working actively against each other for ten days. The article adds that previous training focused on individual skills.
There was no way to replicate training in a denied communications environment it states. The PLA places a lot of importance on communications security and countering enemy networks - it has an entire command for it called the Strategic Support Force. http://www.mod.gov.cn/power/2020-06/24/content_4867115.htm
However, a lot of the training that is shown to the public is superficial, guys jumping through flaming hoops and the like. It may be designed to distract or to give the impression that the PLA hasn't a clue. Perhaps its battle plan involves a lot of fire?
It reminds me of an anecdote I got from a weight training programme - the Russians had an 'SF unit' that spent all of its time lifting weights to get huge and doing martial arts. When NATO visited they would wheel these monsters out for the visitors, keeping the real SF hidden.
The point is, the PLA has little to no real combat experience, but it is learning as most modern armies do. The focus when looking at its equipment and training should be on the skills it is trying to acquire and develop, as they are the capabilities the PLA will use in 10 years.
