Seems to me part of the challenge with getting everyone on board with mask wearing is that there is little in the way of positive reinforcement about it. Like, sure, you can outline the problem and present the solution and inform someone that wearing a mask helps but
Then you wear the mask and you're wearing your mask and it doesn't feel like you're 'doing' anything. There's no further signaling from the reward center in your brain, nobody compliments you for it, you don't watch coronavirus futilely attempting to infect you and failing
Which is all pretty basic and dumb and we should be able to see past that to do what's right because we know better, and most of us are, but still makes getting everyone on board a challenge
So how do we go about creating positive/reward mechanisms that people can adopt and feel motivated by? Is it even possible? Seems more likely that the same people who need that to act are also the people who find *more* reward being contentious contrarian assholes about it
But even if not, you can't really dress this thing up to make it interesting and stimulating in that way. It isn't some heroic battle, it's just this thing that sucks but we still all have to do something about it.
You think about that gun couple everyone is dunking on. To them, their guns are their 'masks' in the sense that they get emotionally fired up and feel rewarded brandishing them to 'protect' themselves against the barbarians at the gates. That sort of BS supercharges their actions
How do we get that couple to view wearing an actual mask to prevent the spread of this virus with the same energy or even anything approaching that sort of energy? Is the point.
Or even just feel positively about it at all. Just feel "By wearing this mask I am protecting myself, my friends, my family, my community and my country. This is good and I am happy to do it" It's all factual. It may not be sexy and heroic and interesting, but it is what it is
Anyway, I dunno what to do about it. Just feeling like what we *are* dong (constant, unrelenting (if justified) shame against anyone not wearing masks) isn't getting it done either.
heh, I said dong
