Hey guys, this is the first thread in the series on Vedic Astrology. Here we discuss how a North Indian chart looks like and the significance of each of the first 6 houses in the chart.

Treat this as an AMA on Vedic Astrology; will try to answer as many Qs as possible and asap.
This is what a typical North Indian chart looks like. The 1st house(called lagna/लग्न) of the chart is the most important house as it’s the house of one’s own self. It depicts your overall personality, overall health and life path.
The ruler of the sign placed in the first house is called lagnesh(लग्नेश). The lagnesh is the most important planet of a kundali, followed by the Moon. If well placed, it alone can guarantee all the success in one’s life.
Lagnesh is like a mother. It tends to avoid giving bad results even if badly placed but the things it is a significator(karak/कारक) of and things related to the houses it owns may suffer if it is ill placed.
For example, if Mercury is the lagnesh and it is ill placed in your chart, you might have problems with your speech, analytical and negotiation abilities, math and your overall intelligence and cleverness. Several other factors play a role too but for these issues Mercury is seen.
There may be any of the 12 astrological signs placed in your 1st house. For example, if your first house has number “6” written, it means you are a Virgo ascendant like me and your lagnesh is Mercury.

This is what a Virgo ascendant chart looks like, with the lord of each house.
The 2nd house of the chart is the kutumb bhav(कुटुंब भाव) and dhan bhav(धन भाव). As the name suggests, it is the house of one’s family and accumulated wealth. The wealth a person will accumulate over one’s life is judged from this house.
This is also the house that covers the teeth, face and beauty. If you ever get a face injury/scar it might be because of a malefic planet sitting or aspecting the 2nd house.
The 3rd house is called the parakram bhav(पराक्रम भाव). This house signifies your determination, bravery, aggressiveness and your brothers. How determined a person will be to achieve one’s dreams and how hard he’s willing to work is judged from this house.
A malefic planet like Rahu, Mars and Saturn sitting in the 3rd house is generally considered good coz it gives one a strong fighting spirit.
The 4th house is called the Matr bhav(मातृ भाव). It is the house of one’s mother. This house is seen for one’s immovable assets like house, farmlands, properties, etc. It is also seen for judging one’s relationship with his mother and for problems to the mother.
The 5th house is the Santaan bhav(संतान भाव) and as its name suggests, it is signifies one’s progeny. Apart from your children, it also represents creativity, overall happiness, hobbies, innovation, stock trading, gambling and education.
1st, 5th and 9th houses are called the Dharma Trikona bhav(त्रिकोण भाव). The rulers of the signs in 5th and 9th houses are always friends of the lagnesh.

For example, for a Virgo ascendant, 5th house has Capricorn sign whose ruler is Saturn, which is a friend of Mercury.
There are 4 types of trikonas in a chart, namely Dharma(houses 1,5,9), Arth(houses 2,6,10), Kaam(houses 3,7,11) and Moksha(houses 4,8,12). Dharma trikona is the most significant of these 4 trikonas.
Moving on to the 6th house now. This is the first of the Trik bhav(त्रिक भाव) or Dushthana bhav(दुष्टाना भाव) in a chart. It signifies some of the bad things in life such as diseases, debts, obstacles, enemies, disputes and litigations, and daily routine life.
6, 8 and 12 houses are the Trik bhav(त्रिक भाव) and their rulers are usually not friends of the lagnesh, with some exceptions. If the first house lord is sitting in any of these houses it is considered quite inauspicious.
But nothing is ever viewed in isolation so even if you have your first house lord in 6, 8 or 12 house, you got to see many other things before you can conclude anything.
Houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 are called quadrant houses/kendra houses(केंद्र भाव). The 1st house is the only house that is both a kendra house and a trikona house. This should tell you how important the 1st house is.
Just to avoid confusion, want to mention that these houses always signify the same things irrespective of what your ascendant is.
Suggest that you all open your birth chart and try to match some of the info I provided. This will help you get a better understanding of the concepts.
In the next thread we discuss house 7 to 12. The ascendant I have chosen for this thread is Virgo but I can choose some other for the next thread. Lemme know which one.

Reply with your Qs and feedback; will try to answer as many as I can.
