Questions to ask when job hunting as a #WomeninTech

Q1. How many women are there? (%)

I ask cos I refuse to join a team/org where I'm the only, or near-only. Personal preference obvs but this explains why:

If you get an answer to Q1, follow up with:
Q2. & that %, is across the org?

THIS IS IMPORTANT cos ye can't just assume it's all good if an org hires "a lot" of women

I can think of 2 big NI-native tech orgs that have a better-than-average 30% women staff - but then also have a better-than-average pay gap. Why?

Well...
Cos hiring more women doesn't mean that that org has worked through its systems to eliminate bias, which means it may not promote them

(N.B. IF they have any women in the C suite, I'd bet me mam they're Director of HR. Token Woman is ALWAYS HR 😂😭)
Q3. What systems have they put in place to eliminate bias?

Cos y'know? I really don't care if they have an internal women's group, a D&I slack channel, or if they sponsor pride, etc. I wanna know about their SYSTEMS.

How they analysing their data? Managing their D&I debt?
If anyone suggests YOU can make a difference from the inside: RUN. RUN FAST

But not after asking:

1. Which job do you want me for? X or D&I? Cos they're very different jobs

2. Are men expected to change the org for free on top of learning their new roles as well?

Now...

RUN
You might think asking these 3Qs is useless: & it kinda is. I mean, you're never gonna get great answers, if you get ANY actual answers at all

Can only hope these challenges are a kick up their hole towards change
Does this make you look difficult? Maybe put off the org from wanting to interview? No

Well, maybe, but IMO that's a good thing #SaveYourself You'll only quit a shit show anywayđŸ€·â€â™€ïž

Do you REALLY wanna work for an org that builds systems but doesn't even review their own?đŸ˜±
Do you REALLY wanna work for an org that hires women but doesn't promote em? Or pushes em out of technical roles? Only sees them as good enough for junior / less technical positions?❌

Like, why bother moving?! You can stay where you are if you want that shit!😂 #LackOfDiversity
These Qs ARE a form of protest, yeah🙈but if we ALL did it, they'd have to start having the answers to hand, & then start looking to improve them after all our gurning!đŸ€”

You have more power than you think. There are more tech jobs than qualified peeps:

YOU ARE A FUCKIN UNICORN
Everyone wants da #WomenInTech, to at least look good, if not for their bigger bottom line. (Yes to bigger bottoms!😍) So fuck it. Make em work for it.

[something originally sexist about milking cows and free milk here]
I hope you all land well-paid jobs with orgs / managers that work hard to improve, more than they care about having their authority challenged / just looking the part, whilst kickstarting a revolution đŸ€žđŸ‘Œâ™„ïž
